Eddie Izzard fails in Labour candidate bid despite gender identity

Comedian Suzy Eddie Izzard has failed in a bid to become a Labour candidate at the next general election.

The stand-up, who identifies as a gender-fluid trans woman, lost to Tom Gray in an attempt to represent Brighton Pavilion.

Mr Gray was a founding member of rock band Gomez, who secured five top-40 UK albums.

The current MP, long-serving Green politician Caroline Lucas, is standing down at the next election.

Izzard previously tried to become Labour MP for Sheffield Central.

At a fringe event at the party’s conference in September, Labour MP Rosie Duffield threatened to quit if Izzard was allowed on an all-women shortlist.

She also said: “Eddie Izzard is not a woman.”

Tory Party deputy chairman Lee Anderson was slammed after saying he would not be “following him into the toilets” if Izzard became an MP.
