Beautiful city named a cheaper and much quieter version of the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast might be one of the best tourist destinations in the world, but that comes with inevitable issues: overcrowding and higher expense for summer getaways. That’s why Procida, an island off the coast of Naples that was  in 2022 named Italy’s Capital of Culture, makes the perfect spot to enjoy just as wonderful an experience – without the crowds.

The small island was the first of its kind to ever be granted the title, and is just under two square miles in size.

Even though it features in multiple big-name films, such as The Talented Mr. Ripley and Il Postino, it has largely flown under the radar of international tourists – although the residents of Naples often flock to it during summer.

It features much of the same pastel houses, cafe-lined marinas, and narrow streets as its bigger counterparts, while also playing host to historic sites, wild nature, and near-empty beaches.

The waterfront is lined with the distinctive pastel-coloured houses, painted in vivid shades of pink, yellow, orange, red, and blue—traditionally a way for fishermen to identify them from their boats.

In terms of restaurants, the island has a huge amount to offer.

La Medusa, which has been around since 1954, is a beautiful spot to stop for lunch, while Bar Roma offers top-notch espresso and and the bizarrely named lingua di suocera (“mother-in-law’s tongue”), Procida’s traditional puff pastry filled with lemon custard.

Those looking for beaches, meanwhile, are in no short supply on Procida, including the black sands of Pozzo Vecchio and the fantastic views of spiaggia Chiaia.

Ciraccio, however, offers the longest and most secluded beach on the island.

Slow island living can be enjoyed at  Marina Corricella, Procida’s oldest fishing village, which can only be reached by foot or by boat. It is full of restaurants and bars.

While tourists seeking more excitement can check out the night-time kayak rides or a private boat tour, which TikToker @testaccina claims set her back just €30.
