The pretty city that’s furthest from the UK thats a ridiculous 30 hours away

How far would you travel away from home for a holiday?

Some people travel all the way to Australia, but for those who want to go even further, there is a city that can provide the ultimate long-distance travel thrill.

Dunedin, New Zealand, is a whopping 30 hours from London. The city sits in the south east of the country and is the furthest possible distance from the UK.

According to estimates, it can take around a day and a half to travel from the UK’s capital to this picturesque part of the southern hemisphere.

While the city can provide some affordable sites, the flights to get there can seem stratospherically costly.

According to cheapflights.co.uk, the quickes route there from London takes just under 30 hour – with two stopovers: one in Singapore and another in Christchurch.

Return flights cost an astronomical £1,487 – looking at prices at the end of April 2024 for a two-week trip.

Once you get to Dunedin, the city is full of iconic sights and sounds to make the long journey all the more worthwhile.

This includes the world’s steepest street, Baldwin Street. According to the Guinness World Records, the road has a gradient of 34.8 percent.

They added: “For the purpose of this record the measurement is taken from the centre line of the street.”

Alongside the world’s steepest street, Dunedin is home to New Zealand’s oldest university and several iconic historic buildings.

This includes Larnach Castle, Olveston Historic Home, the Tuhuira Otago Museum, and the Dunedin Gas Works.

On the Tuhura Otago Museum, the official Dunedin website said: “It’s like time travel. See what a classic museum looked like during Victorian times in the ‘Animal Attic’.

“Then just a few steps away, artefacts from ancient Greece and Egypt and examples of seafaring derring-do will absorb you before the fantastical treats of the science centre and planetarium bounce you into the future.”

One of the most popular attractions in Dunedin according to Trip Advisor is the Toitu Otago Settlers Museum which informs tourists about the island’s origins.

One tourist who travelled all the way from Manchester said: “Very interesting and well-organised museum. We found it easy to follow the story of Dunedin as the rooms are chronological and nicely spaced.

“It’s free to enter but definitely worth a donation. A good attraction in its own right but perfect when it’s stormy and wet.”

Another person added: “Great exhibitions, good balance between interactive and static parts, we actually came twice in two days. Pounamu at the entrance is super cool!”
