Ukrainian forces are “in a mess” as its troops prepare for a hard winter in its war against the Russian invasion, it has been claimed.

Russian forces have thrown thousands of men into key towns and cities in Ukraine as Kyiv’s soldiers run low on ammunition and other resources.

In recent weeks, Ukraine’s political and military leadership have shown signs of public disagreement after Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko accused President Volodymyr Zelensky of behaving like an “autocrat.”

Former Ukrainian General Staff Chief Viktor Muzhenko warned earlier this month that Ukraine “needs a pause” in the fighting.

He added that Kyiv’s men “cannot advance anywhere, everything that is happening is on such a small scale that it clearly won’t lead neither to victory nor to the liberation of Ukrainian territory.”

Yurii Nikolov, head of the investigative media project Nashi Hroshi, also told the Kyiv Independent that divisions between President Zelensky and Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi are indicative of Ukraine’s struggles.

He added that it may have been this division that delayed some of Ukraine’s preparations for future fighting.

Mr Nikolov said: “I think only now have the country’s top officials started to realize the mess that Ukraine is in at the moment.

“Of course, it is better late than never but at face value, it doesn’t look good.”

A senior artillery commander posted near Bakhmut told the same outlet that Russian troops are advancing near the town, and the same is true in Avdiivka.

He added: “Neither fortified positions nor the second line are being prepared properly, nor are the villages that in the near future could be engulfed in active hostilities.

“When the Russians storm the trenches, our guys have nowhere to retreat and there are no positions to take; they have to dig trenches under machine gun and sniper fire, never mind artillery shelling.”

Ukraine has relied on Western support for its efforts to fight back against the invasion.

However, many figures from the Republican Party are attempting to block military aid for Ukraine as they seek concessions from President Joe Biden on immigration.

In the European Union, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has vetoed a €50billion EU aid package for Ukraine.

Posting on X, Mr Orban simply said: “Summary of the nightshift: veto for the extra money to Ukraine.”
