The technology minister has said Boris Johnson cannot be held responsible for a mob of protesters who surrounded and harassed Sir Keir Starmer. The Prime Minister is facing fresh calls to apologise for his widely discredited claim that the Labour leader failed to prosecute Jimmy Savile, after the demonstrators accused Sir Keir of “protecting paedophiles”. Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Mr Philp said: “Some of the individuals involved in last night’s incident I believe have done this before.
“For example, Michael Gove, Newsnight journalist Nick Watt have suffered similar incidents in the past. This is part of a long-running pattern of behaviour by some of the individuals concerned.
“I’ve also watched the clip in full, it’s about three minutes long and these people were mostly talking about Julian Assange for some reason that I don’t understand.
“They were talking about Covid vaccines and about the conduct of the Opposition in general.
“They did mention Jimmy Savile as well but most of what they were shouting was to do with Julian Assange.”
He added: “I don’t accept that there is any link between the Prime Minister’s reference to Keir Starmer’s record as director of public prosecutions and what happened last night which was totally unacceptable and there is no justification and no excuse for that kind of behaviour.”
