Fisheries remains the huge stumbling block in post-Brexit trade deal negotiations between the UK and EU, with the two sides said to be “miles apart” on the issue as the clock ticks down to the end of the transition period on December 31. British negotiators have offered their European counterparts a “review clause” on any fishing agreement after three to five years in a bid to force a breakthrough on the red line. But Brussels is instead demanding this happen in 10-15 years, with critics warning a future pro-EU Government in the UK could quickly reverse any deals or agreements made.

The long-term review means a future UK Government could simply sacrifice to the EU, tearing up all the progress made by the current British negotiators since the historic Brexit referendum in June 2016.

Express.co.uk readers have reacted furiously to the demand from the EU and are urging Mr Johnson to end negotiations with Brussels and leave the bloc without a trade deal in place.

Responding to our original story, one person wrote: “Idiots! Would the European Courts grant a ten-year ‘review’ on every divorce?

“No settlements, no division of assets, no custody battles, continued financial support, no ‘unfair’ arrangements with new partners, power to ‘veto’ such arrangements etc?

“Our waters, our country, our business, our rules!”

A second reader said: “Time to walk on WTO terms. No deal to review then.

“I can’t believe the EU are so stupid to force a no-deal. It’s the exact thing the British people voted for.

“We cancel the trade deficit and get our waters back fully as we should do any way. Win-win for the UK.”

Another person commented: “More and more influential people are urging Boris Johnson to end the negotiations and make the needed arrangements to transition to trading with EU members on WTO terms.

“The EU refuses to recognize the UK’s sovereignty.

“It is time to go. Let the French fishermen riot and burn Paris or whatever the yellow vest protesters left for them to burn.

“Macron alone will be blamed for destroying the French fishing industry. Let him face the music.

“Meanwhile the Government can use the money that no longer goes to the EU to support workers and businesses as they transition to a global trading environment.”

A fourth reader said: “The simple truth is that the EU just don’t want to let the cash cow go in the hope that a change in government will want the UK to re-join.”

Another person urged the Prime Minister to take the UK out of the EU without a Brexit deal in place.

They added: “Boris, the best Christmas present you could give the UK right now is to walk away without a deal from the EU.

“They are not negotiating in good faith, they are dictating and telling the UK we must accept their terms only.”

The UK has continued to warn the EU over the prospect of a no-deal Brexit unless the bloc moves on several of its demands.

Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove said on Tuesday: “I hope that we will be able to secure a good deal with the European Union.

“The European Union needs to move as well, and it needs to acknowledge that we voted to take back control and that’s the most important thing.”

On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned the EU is “well prepared for a no-deal scenario” and that time is running out to strike an agreement.

She told the European Parliament: “The next days are going to be decisive. The European Union is well prepared for a no-deal scenario.

“With very little time ahead of us, we will do all in our power to reach an agreement. We are ready to be creative.”
