The anger comes as Canada probed Britain’s application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Ottawa insists the rules dictate Britain must import hormone-treated beef as part of the conditions to be accepted into the trade bloc.

Venting their frustration at the edgy stance taken by Canada, Express.co.uk readers reacted angrily.

Wiseone1 raged: “We sound like the EU, we want to join but we don’t accept their standards.

“Let them sell it here but we don’t have to buy it.

“I will avoid Canadian beef and American chicken.

“Everyone can make their own minds up.

BBC Phode chimed in: “Simple, let the beef in, but when it’s sold make sure the packaging has ‘Contains Unnatural Hormones’ in big red letters on the front, by law.

“Let the consumer decide.”

RLS55 agreed by saying: “Better still, have in red lettering, ‘Produced in Canada’ or wherever it is produced, thus allowing the consumer to boycott it and only buy British.”

Yet, with rising costs of living, some questioned whether Britain has a choice when it comes to importing meat.

MinniesGranny said: “I think most of the imported beef will go into ready meals and most people who eat ready meals don’t seem to care so long as it is cheap.

“We already import beef from elsewhere in the world for factory meals so what is the difference.

“I only buy meat from my butcher, but after years of scrimping and saving we can just about afford it.”

One reader questioned how the logistics and control of such products would work.

iDontHaveaName wrote: “How is that going to work for restaurants, school kitchens, hamburgers and most crucially, processed foods?

“Are you going to require those big red letters on each sandwich, stock cube or can of soup?

“Besides, for a large portion of the population, it will not be a choice.”

However, some commentators saw the situation as a negative consequence of Brexit and leaving the EU.

Pausanius wrote: “Are you beginning to see the light, Brexiteers? Are you beginning to see how you were lied to and fooled?

“‘Taking back control’ and ‘Sovereignty for Britain’ are meaningless slogans in national and international life, unless you have the actual POWER, political and economic, to impose yourself on others.

“We need the food. We are isolated with our hopelessly unbalance economy: weak, weak … We are not more powerful than the Pacific Rim countries.

“We cannot impose ourselves on Canada.”

Many blamed Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau for the power move and lashed out.

DavefromDerby claimed: “Trudeau is despised by Canadians and brown noses Macron.

“Silly fool will be unemployed at the next election.”

Tough of the Trace agreed with the claims, writing: “Trudeau’s days are numbered anyway.

“He’s lost the confidence of Canadian citizens and lost all authority.

“Even the police are turning their backs on him.”

Zobra ended by saying: “The Queen should dismiss Justin Trudeau, as is her right as Queen of Canada.

“He is clearly unfit for his intended purpose.”

The UK is yet to sign a deal to join the 11 members CPTPP.
