A boy struck by lightning on a football field is in hospital with “serious” injuries.

The lad was hit in Blackpool shortly after 5pm on Tuesday, May 11.

Police were called to the scene after receiving reports the youngster had been injured, LancsLive reports.

The area had been hit by a sudden thunderstorm, according to reports.

He was taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains after being left with serious injuries.

Lancashire Police believe that the youth was hit by lightning while out on the field.

But inquiries are under way to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

Emergency services remain at the scene.

There are currently road closures in place, with people being urged to avoid the area.

The incident is also causing congestion around Blackpool Airport and South Shore.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: "We were called shortly after 5.05pm today (Tuesday, May 11th) to a football field on School Road, Blackpool, to reports a child had been injured.
