China has sparked a dangerous “global standoff” as Beijing and Washington trade theories over the cause of the coronavirus outbreak. Chinese officials have called from a probe into possible ties between US Biolabs and the emergence of the deadly virus. It comes amid mounting international calls for an independent investigation into the claims that Covid originated in the Chinese government lab in Wuhan.

Sky News Australia presenter Danica De Giorgio said: “Chinese officials are turning the tables on the US by calling for an investigation into federal American Biolabs for the discovery of coronavirus origins.

“China’s blame game erupted as the global community calls for a new independent investigation into the origins of the global pandemic that has stolen 3.85 million lives around the world so far.

US President Joe Biden’s National Security advisor Jake Sullivan has been calling for international pressure on China to agree on an investigation.

Mr Sullivan said: “The international community needs access to China to be able to get that initial data that will tell us the most about where this virus came from and how it entered into the world.”

Meanwhile, the Chinese foreign ministry has responded with its own allegations.

“Some in the US have chosen to ignore the report, and have hyping up the ‘lab leak theory and politizing the origin-tracing issue,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian.

US lawmakers have reacted angrily to China’s latest statements regarding an investigation into the origins of the virus.

Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows told Fox News: “It has always been according to the Chinese, it has been America’s fault.

“It is a propaganda narrative that the Chinese have put out.”

Fox News reporter Gillian turner added the row has become a “truly global standoff.”

She added that some Republican lawmakers are now calling for harsh sanctions against China until Xi Jinping’s regime agrees to an investigation.

WHO’s director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has recently confirmed the organisation is preparing for the second phase of its investigation into the origins of coronavirus.

He called on China to show “transparency” and the “cooperation” with investigators.

An open letter has been signed by 18 scientists criticising the official World Health Organisation investigation into the emergency of Covid, saying it did not make a “balanced consideration.”

The letter read: “More investigation is still needed to determine the origin of the pandemic.

“Theories of accidental release from a lab and zoonotic spillover both remain viable.”
