US President Donald Trump accused China of having “continually violated its promises” to them and “many other nations” last week. His comments were made amid worsening relations between the two superpowers over their handling of the initial cases of coronavirus, suspected espionage and interference in Hong Kong. The White House recently accused China of an attempt to “cover-up” COVID-19 and claimed the moment would “go down in history along with Chernobyl”. The death toll in the US is in excess of 117,000. But some in opposition to the billionaire, who became a world leader in 2016, claim his handling of the crisis was equally to blame for the number of deaths. Forensic psychiatrist Dr Bandy Lee claimed that his mentality during the outbreak had been similar to that of a “violent offender”.
Ms Lee claimed to first recognise Donald Trump as a “threat” during the 2016 presidential campaign when she spotted “the personality and the dynamic of pathology”.
The Yale School of Medicine graduate told Express.co.uk: “I specialise in treating violent offenders in prisons – and this was horrifying.”
Previously, she considered him to be “an odious figure who cheated in business” during his time as a property tycoon in New York but her fears grew once his aspirations were realised.
Ms Lee felt the US leader acted “dangerous” during the early coronavirus outbreak by “being slow to contain the disease in a big and mobile country” which she claimed “no doubt contributed to the rapid spread everywhere else”.
She added: “This is what happens with a leader who dangerously lacks mental capacity – crises bring out the stark difference between having a healthy leader and a mentally impaired one, for no matter if one loves him or not.
“The final death toll will be more the result of mental disease than of viral disease: he is creating the environment that vastly facilitates spread of the microbe.”
Ms Lee believes he is “constantly shifting” and “reshaping the narrative” of the coronavirus pandemic, which may have led to further condemnation of China.
She claimed his initial efforts included dubbing the pandemic the “Democrats’ ‘new hoax’” before he backtracked to state that he “always knew” about the risks.
Soon after that she commented that he switched again from a strategy of “we have it totally under control” to “this blindsided the world”.
Prior to the escalation with China, Ms Lee predicted: “As suffering worsens he will have a lot of anger to redirect against anyone he chooses and to subvert any law.”
She fears that he will use the pandemic to “maximal advantage” by “likely postponing elections”, which she dubbed “his dream”.

Ms Lee along with other psychiatrists wrote individual “mental health evaluations” of the US leader, which they published in the 2017 book ‘The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump’.
She told Express.co.uk: “Not once have we been wrong. When we say that this presidency will end with destruction and violence, the world should listen to us.
“Laypeople could not appreciate how dangerous this presidency was from the start, and they are still underestimating.
“Mental health professionals have been warning against this presidency since his election – it was never about politics but about public health and safety.
“Because he has no empathy or conscience, he is about to put the entire nation – and the world – in danger but also not be held accountable for it.
“This is how mental pathology works: it becomes a weapon for someone with ill intent, as it hijacks the minds of his followers, who believe he is doing his best and a great job.”
