England sees hottest day of year as temperatures hotter than Barcelona and Rome

Temperatures in England were hotter than several Mediterranean hotspots on Sunday (May 14) as Brits revelled in the sunshine.

The mercury reached 21.4C at Heathrow, the Met Office said, making it the hottest day of the year in England so far by pipping the 21.3C recorded in Sheffield a week earlier.

Thousands flocked to beaches and parks to enjoy the warm weekend, and they did so in temperatures similar to those recorded on the Greek island of Corfu, which saw highs of 22C.

And temperatures in England were better than holiday destinations Rome (20C) and Barcelona (17C).

The weather was also warm on Saturday (May 13), with south-east England enjoying the best of the conditions.

However, the new week is likely to see the return of showery downpours – with hail and thunder a possibility for northern parts of England and Scotland.

Met Office forecaster Stephen Keates said: "We've had plenty of sunshine around over the weekend.

"We're going to hold onto a decent segment of that fine weather but there will be the odd scattered shower about. Some of them will be heavy at times.

"It's also going to feel cooler than what it has been with temperatures dropping slightly."

Temperatures could even drop low enough for northern parts of the UK to experience an overnight frost.

Later in the week conditions are expected to be mostly fine, although with the odd scattered shower still lingering.

Rain could be heavier on Friday (May 19), especially in north-west Scotland.

Temperatures are set to remain close to the seasonal average throughout the week, although forecasters still expect a high-pressure ridge to bring fine and dry conditions for the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of the month.

And the Met Office says there is “an increased likelihood of above average temperatures for many” throughout June.
