Greeley man gets 21 years in prison for stabbing older man in neck, chest

A Greeley man has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for stabbing a 72-year-old man who was standing in a convenience store parking lot.

Margarito Rodriguez, 28, pleaded guilty Wednesday to firist-degree assault and was sentenced. Investigators said Rodriguez stabbed the man in the neck and chest last June outside a 7-Eleven store in Greeley. They said the older man was talking to another person when Rodriguez attacked him.

Rodriguez then ran to a nearby backyard, where officers found him. Investigators believe the stabbing was a random act of violence.

Rodriguez also pleaded guilty to first-degree assault for punching a Weld County Sheriff’s Office corrections officer while in jail. The five-year sentence will run concurrently to the stabbing sentence.
