The apparent support for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in America is not as strong as US press coverage suggests, it has been claimed.
While opinion over the Sussexes’ explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey has been split in the UK, media coverage over the pond has appeared sympathetic.
And a snap poll from YouGov a day after the interview aired suggested 44% of US adults believed the interview was appropriate, compared to just 21% of Brits.
But an American listener to The Mirror’s Pod Save the Queen podcast has claimed the US public have noticed “so many holes” in the couple’s story.
Kelly O’Keefe, who has spent time living in London, said she has spoken to some of her friends that were not so sympathetic.
“One thing I would like to point out ‒ I am an American but have spent some time living in London over the years ‒ is that you just said American press post-interview seems to be pro-Sussex,” she said.
“True to the press but not true to the American people.
“Most of the people I know and have spoken to here see so many holes in the interview and the whole ‘poor little rich couple’ during a pandemic is ridiculous.”
During the interview, Harry bemoaned how he was financially “cut off” from his family in the first quarter of 2020 following the announcement that he and Meghan would be stepping back as senior royals.
It meant he had to find new sources of income to afford “security” for his family.
But the revelation has been criticized by royal commentators, particularly in light of the fact the Sussexes themselves said they wished to be financially independent in their initial statement about stepping back last year.
American pals of the former Suits actress have come out in their droves to offer their support for Meghan following the interview, including her on-screen husband Patrick J Adams.
And Gayle King, an anchor for US news channel CBS, has shared further astonishing insights into the couple’s thoughts after speaking to them following their Oprah interview.
She claimed that Harry’s first conversation with Prince William was “unproductive”.
