A paedophile died after “choking on a drink” just eight months into an 18-year stretch for sick child sex offences.
Thought to be one of the UK's oldest paedophiles, Grandad Alan Styles was transferred from HMP Birmingham to a hospice to die after a period of bad health.
The Black Country pensioner, aged 85, had carers looking after him in jail after staff decided he needed a cell on a special healthcare ward in the prison.
After, he was allowed release on “compassionate grounds” and died in a hospice last July after ordering medics not to resuscitate him, reports Birmingham Live.
Vile inmate Styles ended up behind bars in November 2020 after carrying out shocking sex attacks on three schoolgirls.
He was jailed for 18 years after admitting a total of 27 offences – including rape, sexual assault, indecent images and sexual activity with a child.
Healthcare staff at the prison identified that Styles was suffering from a number of medical issues relating to old age when he was first incarcerated.
He was given a cell on the health and social care ward at the prison in Winson Green, with carers helping him with his everyday needs.
Styles agreed to a 'do not attempt resuscitation' order a month after he was locked up following a discussion with a prison doctor.
The pensioner was admitted to hospital several times for treatment as his health worsened between December 2020 and April 2021.
But the convict – formerly of Yew Tree Lane, Wednesbury – continued to become 'frailer'.
He was taken to hospital after choking on a drink on July 1, with hospital staff deciding to 'start end of life care'.
The sex offender was then transferred to Birmingham's Willow House in line with his wishes, a report from the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman read.
Karen Johnson, assistant ombudsman, said: "The deputy governor granted a special purpose licence with the condition that one prison officer stayed with him at the hospice.”
An independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman found Styles died from 'old age fragility'.

There were no issues of concern and the care he received behind bars was 'equivalent' to what he would have been given at home, it said.
Wolverhampton Crown Court heard Styles groomed his victims with gifts as he carried out sex attacks over a four-year period until spring 2018.
One of his victims was thought to be just eight when he started targeting her, with two others under 14.
Officers discovered a camera and memory cards with 665 indecent images of children, West Midlands Police said.
The force later found two other girls had suffered at the hands of the pensioner.
