The Queen has wished her son Prince Charles a happy birthday as he turns 72.

Posting two adorable images on social media, The Queen wrote in a cute message: "Wishing The Prince of Wales a very happy birthday today!"

The Prince of Wales, who is next in line to the thrown, turned 72 on Saturday, November 14, and has already been inundated with well wishers sending him birthday messages.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge earlier posted a sweet photo of a beaming Prince Charles on social media with a beautiful birthday message.

Last weekend on Remembrance Sunday, the prince laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in honour of the country's war dead on behalf of the Queen.

During 2020 the heir to the throne has seen the Duke and Duchess of Sussex step down from official royal duties and move to America, and experienced coronavirus first hand, contracting the virus in March.

Like the rest of the royal family he adapted his engagements during the first national lockdown, taking them online by holding video calls and posting messages of support on social media.

He is the oldest heir to the throne for more than 300 years.

It is not yet known how he will celebrate the special day, although he is expected to mark it privately.

Prince Charles and Camilla will spend the day attending the annual National Day of Mourning in Berlin.

The pair will also take part in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Neue Wache Memorial, before joining the Central Remembrance Ceremony at the German parliament, where the Prince of Wales will deliver a speech.
