Xi Jinping’s state has demanded Taiwan cease its ties with the US as it threatens the peace and stability in the region. China has constantly reminded Taiwan it will soon reclaim the state, which it considers it’s own due to historical claims. As tensions between the two escalate, the state-run Global Times, which acts as a mouthpiece for China, insisted the true evil nature of the Taiwanese government was now on show.

While insisting China wants to create room for peaceful reunification, the paper warned the collusion between Washington and Taipei is now a threat to peace in the country and the region.

This opinion piece comes as the People’s Liberation Army conducted several military drills in the region during undersecretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, Keith Krach’s visit to Taiwan last week.

The state has claimed the drills were intended to show China’s sovereignty in the region.

The paper said: “The Tsai authority should either stop playing with fire before it is too late, or prepare for dire consequences.

“Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.

“The PLA’s relevant exercises are necessary to maintain China’s sovereignty and cross-Straits security.

“The collusion between the US and the DPP authority is threatening the safety and welfare of all Taiwan people, as well as regional security.

“It has pushed the island to an impasse.”

During Mr Krach’s visit, the Taiwanese Defence ministry revealed 19 Chinese aircraft had crossed into the state’s airspace.

In response, Taiwan’s air force was forced to scramble jets for the second day in a row after Chinese jets passed over the Strait.

Between Friday and Saturday, Taipei’s Defence Ministry counted 37 Chinese aircraft which passed across the Taiwan Strait towards the country.

As well as the threat of Chinese aircraft, the People’s Liberation Army Navy also conducted drills in the East China Sea.

In light of the military activity, Taiwan’s President, Tasi-Ing wen, demanded China cease the military activities.

She also stated China’s actions are not just a threat to relations between the two countries, but also the whole of the region.

She added: “What we are seeing now is not just a situation across the Taiwan Strait, but a regional situation.

“China’s recent military activities, especially in the past few days, clearly constitute a threat of force, which is part of their verbal attacks and military threats against Taiwan.”

Despite China’s threats towards Taiwan, Mr Krach’s visit was mainly to attend the funeral of former Taiwan President, Lee Teng-hui.

Indeed, despite the military drills in the region during the visit, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo dismissed Beijing’s threats.

He said last week: “We sent the delegation to a funeral, and the Chinese have apparently responded by military blustering.

“I’ll leave it at that.”
