WWE fans eye WrestleMania season as ticket sales for Royal Rumble smash records

A record-busting year for WWE has continued after the company announced gate receipts for January’s Royal Rumble had already smashed the $5million barrier.

It has been a lucrative last 12 months or so for the world’s biggest sports entertainment company, which takes one of its biggest annual events back to Texas in the New Year.

Royal Rumble is largely regarded as the second biggest extravaganza of WWE’s packed calendar – behind only WrestleMania in the grandeur and revenue stakes.

Interest in the event – and WWE as a whole – seems to be reaching new heights as the company continues to evolve under the stewardship of Chairwomen Stephanie McMahon.

Husband Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque heads up the company’s on-screen creative as they build towards the 2023 WrestleMania season – which typically begins with the Rumble.

WWE confirmed on Monday the 2023 instalment had already racked up more than $5million (£4.2million) in ticket sales – making it the highest grossing event in the show’s 36-year history.

That figure tops the previous record set in 2017 when the Rumble came, ironically enough, from the same venue as next year's – San Antonio’s AlamoDome.

Wrestling ticket analyst WrestleTix reports the January 28 spectacle was, at the weekend, around 3,000 tickets of selling out – with more than 30,000 tickets already sold.

It continues a fantastic run of attendances and big-money events for McMahon and co – back in September they descended on Cardiff, Wales for Clash at the Castle for an historic event.

More than 62,000 fans packed into the Principality Stadium to see Drew McIntyre push Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns to the limit in the main event.

As well as a rampant atmosphere, the event also smashed records as WWE’s highest grossing European event of all time.

Company figures suggest Clash at the Castle pocketed the company a cool $8million (£6.7million) in ticket sales, boosting hope that high-profile stadium shows here in the UK might become a regular thing.

The likes of WrestleMania and Crown Jewel in 2022 also performed well, but it isn’t just WWE’s bank balance that’s reflecting a high level of interest in the product.

Back in the summer, McMahon stated that August’s SummerSlam had become the most-watched event in the show’s history – helping WWE on its way to reaching more than 90 million YouTube subscribers and an eye-watering 70 billion lifetime views on the channel.

There’s another huge show in the offing this weekend, too. Survivor Series: War Games airs from the States on Saturday.

Fans in the UK will need to wait until the other side of WrestleMania to see their favourites live – WWE brings the action to these shores for shows in Birmingham and Manchester.

By then it’s hoped WWE will have welcomed back Cody Rhodes from his lengthy injury lay-off, while Charlotte Flair has also been absent from screens for several months.
