Timothy Wilks was shot by David Starnes Jr., 23, who says he shot Mr Wilks and at the people he was with in self-defense.
Mr Wilks, 20, and some friends were reportedly attempting to pull a prank on strangers in the hopes of making a viral YouTube video.
The shooting took place in the car park of Urban Air, a trampoline and adventure park in a strip mall in Nashville, Tennessee, reports local media.
Mr Starnes was among a group of people who did not realise Mr Wilks was filming a prank.
It's alleged the stunt was meant to look like a robbery and Mr Wilks and his friends were carrying butcher knives.
Witnesses told detectives the young man and a friend were making the video and approached Mr Starnes and a group of people.
When officers arrived, Mr Starnes admitted to shooting the 20-year-old, who died from his injuries.
He says he shot Mr Wilks to defend himself and the people he was with, during the incident on Friday evening.
Metro Police say no charges have been filed against Mr Starnes but an investigation is underway.
The incident happened on Old Hickory Boulevard, Nashville, just before 9.30pm Friday, (3.30am GMT).
