A woman had her face mauled while trying to save her dogs from a pair of American XL bully breed dogs.<\/p>\n
Christine Potts and her friend Tracey Heyhurst attempted to wrestle the two beasts in the busy park. But their efforts were in vain, as the animals only halted their attack when they tired and wandered off.<\/p>\n
Moments later, one of the XL bullies reportedly attacked another dog at Willow Park in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside. Christine had her face and head bitten and is believed to have broken her nose during the initial attack.<\/p>\n

Christine and Tracey were sat on a park bench after walking their dogs \u2013 Rosie, a 16-year-old West Highland Terrier, and Mylo, a two-year-old Papillion. They recalled hearing a woman scream moments before the dogs pounced.<\/p>\n

According to reports, The XL Bullies were not on a lead at the time of the attack. One of the beasts grabbed Rosie by the neck, clamping its powerful jaws on her.<\/p>\n
In an interview with The Mirror, Tracey told how she kicked and punched the huge pet while it attacked Rosie. But her efforts \u201cdid not do anything at all\u201d.<\/p>\n
It was then the second XL Bully made a move for Mylo. Christine had lay on the ground to protect the puppy with her body, leaving her vulnerable to the attack.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the publication, Christine said: \u201cAt one point I was getting so tired I thought we would have to let them kill our dogs. We just could not keep fighting.<\/p>\n
\u201dThe dogs, one white and the other tan, finally ran off but seconds later the darker-coloured animal attacked a three-year-old Yorkshire Terrier-Chihuahua cross called Scooby, who was also in the park with its owner Jackie Mahoney, 50. Jackie also had to fight to save her pet, which was badly bitten and needed a staple in a back wound.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe police arrived and both XL Bullies were captured.\u201d However, it is understood that no one has been arrested in connection with the attack.<\/p>\n

Christine noted how the beasts could easily have attacked a child. Both she and Tracey have backed calls to ban the breed but also support the Mirror\u2019s campaign for an overhaul of the Dangerous Dogs Act.<\/p>\n
After her dog Scooby was mauled, Jackie Mahoney started an online petition calling for a Bully ban, which has now been signed by more than 25,000 people. Jackie, a social worker, said: \u201cDoing nothing is not an option. We have got to do something immediately. If we don\u2019t we are basically saying it is ok for people to be killed. It is okay for children to be killed.\u201d<\/p>\n
A spokesman for Merseyside Police, who are investigating the incident, said no-one has been arrested and the two seized dogs are in secure kennels under police control.<\/p>\n
