An MP who spoke up for the victim of an \u201cunwanted sexual advance\u201d by her former chief whip has told how the ostracism that followed drove her to seek counselling.<\/p>\n
Lisa Cameron, a former NHS clinical psychologist, felt the SNP\u2019s hierarchy turned against her in the wake of a scandal that rocked the Westminster group.<\/p>\n
Former chief whip Patrick Grady, 43, was suspended from the Commons in June last year for two days after an independent panel found he engaged in \u201cunwanted physical touching\u201d with a 19-year-old member of staff.<\/p>\n
Ms Cameron said that SNP MPs were effectively \u201cdirected to support Patrick Grady\u201d but that she \u201cpiped up\u201d and made the case for taking a \u00ad\u201cvictim-led approach\u201d.<\/p>\n
A \u201ctumbleweed\u201d moment followed, she said, and after the meeting she felt like \u201cpersona non grata\u201d with the hierarchy.<\/p>\n
For months she believed she was \u201creally ostracised with few people speaking to me from my party. It seemed like I was being excluded and I ended up having to go to the welfare services in Westminster for a year for counselling because I felt that I was being bullied.<\/p>\n
READ MORE: <\/strong> Young BBC audience member refuses to back down to \u2018bullyboy\u2019 SNP chief<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cBasically, the counsellor there was great but he spent the best part of a year reassuring me that I hadn\u2019t done anything wrong by speaking up for a victim \u2013 which makes you feel like you are in some sort of alternative universe.\u201d<\/p>\n A recording surfaced of then-SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford \u00adurging MPs to \u201cgive as much support as possible\u201d to Mr Grady.<\/p>\n He later apologised as this had \u201ccaused distress to the complainant\u201d.<\/p>\n It is reported that Ms Cameron will face a challenge from a party worker for her East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow seat, which she has held since 2015.<\/p>\n She believes she has an important role to play in Westminster. \u201cMy constituents feel Westminster needs a psychologist, otherwise they wouldn\u2019t have voted for me.\u201d<\/p>\n We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you.
