A tourist has plunged to their death after the floor of a glass walkway shattered above a forest.

Some 11 tourists were crossing the Geong bridge in Indonesia at about 10am on Wednesday (October 25) when the incident occurred. The famous transparent path sits 30ft off the ground, propped up by giant golden hands, and is popular with visitors to the holiday hotspot.

As the tourists crossed the path the glass panels failed and broke under their feet, causing four people to fall to the floor below. Two tumbled into the Limpakuwus Pine Forest, with one of them later declared dead.

The second sustained minor injuries, according to reports. The remaining two managed to cling onto the frame of the bridge. Horrified onlookers watched and recorded footage as the pair hung on for dear life.

Local police have now opened an investigation into the incident and have set up a crime scene. And this is not the first time concerns have been raised over the safety of the bridge.

Back in April when the bridge first opened Ekop Purnomo, chairman of the Limpakuwus Pine Forest Cooperative, approached the Geong's manager for a safety evaluation. He said the request came after worrisome social media users expressed their concerns over how safe the bridge actually was.

Purnomo claimed some five per cent of visitors raised issues online after visiting the attraction. However, despite his request, he said the bridge's manager declined to attend the meeting and sent a representative.

Speaking on Wednesday, Purnomo said: "There was no discussion. We only left a message."

Purnomo has agreed to close the forest, managed separately from the Geong bridge, while local police investigate the incident.
