Bleak British autumn already got you down and desperate for a spot of sun? Well, the Moroccan town of Essaouira is little more than a three-hour flight away and it boasts temperatures north of 30C in November.

The town is a hotchpotch of French, Portuguese and local Berber architecture and has narrow bustling lanes that attracts tourists in seek of a bargain.

Perched on the Moroccan coast, Essaouira enjoys wide sandy beaches without the hoards of holidaymakers you may expect in other winter sun spots.

The mazy streets and Cape Sim and Sidi Kaouki beaches are the main draw in the Atlantic coastal town. But Marrakech is also a short bus ride away if you want to break your trip up with some more urban sightseeing.

One user wrote: “The picturesque medina, bustling souks, enchanting beach, and the warmth of the locals make this city a must-visit. I highly recommend this authentic experience in Morocco.”

Another recommended the town ahead of much-loved Marrakech: “Loved essaouira! So laid back compared to marrakech. Could wander around those streets all day. Lovely products to buy from handmade lanterns and artwork to stalls selling fruit. Plenty places to stop for food and drink.”
