Backbenchers have urged the former Prime Minister to hold talks with Nigel Farage as part of a leadership tie-up.
Conservative backbenchers are said to be panicking about polling figures which show voters turning to the Reform Party, the successor to Mr Farage’s Brexit Party.
The rebelling MPs hope they can convince the two political heavyweight to form a pact and close the 20 point lead held by Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour.
One Tory MP said: “Reform are going to kill us, so we have to buy Farage off. The plan is we get him into the Lords, give him some brief like we did with Cameron – maybe even Home Secretary – then go to the country with the dream team.
“It may not be enough to win, but it would definitely re-energise our base, shake up the debate and give Starmer something to think about.”
Some MPs believe Mr Johsnon, who quit as an MP earlier this year, is the only person with the power to neutralise Mr Farage’s impact in Red Wall seats.
The Boris backers believe they can bring Mr Johnson to the Commons if an MP quit a safe seat before the election.
Voters in the Midlands and North were the ones the Former Prime Minister won over from Labour at the 2019 General Election.
