Such a significant uplift in the salary threshold is very welcome. This in addition to the changes on student dependents should enable us to significantly cut the level of legal migration into the country.
After the last set of depressing stats were published on net migration I published a report outlining 12 clear steps to enable the Government to slash net migration.
Slash it to such an extent that we could meet our manifesto commitment to cut net legal migration. It’s incredibly frustrating that it has taken another set of depressing net migration data for the Government to act.
But act they have. Finally. This needs to be the start of a radical new approach to migration, both legal and illegal. One that finally prioritises the views and needs of the British people.
The depressing thing is all progress this new approach would bring about would be wiped out by a Labour Government.
The pressure is on the Government to demonstrate unequivocally to the British people that on migration it will design an approach that can restore the trust of the British pekoe in the Conservative Party on this vital issue.
The next key step the Government must take is on illegal migration. Without a credible deterrent such as the Rwanda scheme then we will be unable to properly “stop the boats”.
The emergency legislation the Government has indicated it plans to bring forward must be the real deal. The so-called “full fat option”.
It must state very clearly that the will of the elected Parliament must rule supreme on this vital issue. We must not let outdated international treaties and conventions stifle us.
Now is the time for us to be courageous and really mean it when we say “we will do whatever it takes” to stop the boats.
