Prisoners raging as Sunday roasts replaced with brown chicken stew slop

Prisoners are raging after Sunday roasts were replaced with stew.

Inmates at HMP Norwich, a 700-capacity jail in Norfolk, were left staring into their plates after being served up "slop" instead of roast chicken, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puds and all the trimmings.

Inspectors from the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) said that a decision was made to replace Sunday roasts with "brown chicken stew" due to a shortage of chicken legs.

Angry lags were even more incensed when prison chiefs told them they could only order two bananas from the tuck shop each week – and were even told eggs were off the menu at brekkie.

The crackdown was put into place recently, limiting certain foods or cutting them out completely – with notices about the changes pinned around the jail.

Inspectors from the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) stated in a recent report that menus "had to be changed" after shortages of some items.

It stated: “Shortages of some foodstuffs led to changes in the menus and some canteen items were limited.

“Notices advised prisoners that the shortage of chicken legs meant that Sunday roast lunch was replaced by brown chicken stew on numerous occasions.”

It added: “A Governor’s notice advised that a limit of two bananas per canteen order was applied and the canteen choice of items were cut.

“Shortages of eggs meant that eggs were temporarily removed from the menu.”

The report goes on to say that some lags took more than their fair share, pinching whole loaves of bread, fruit and biccies when queuing up for grub.

It stated: “Serveries were not monitored appropriately by staff.

“IMB members routinely observed that some prisoners took extra food, for example whole loaves of bread, several pieces of fruit, and additional biscuits.

“Servery orderlies and staff confirmed that there were often insufficient meals for all the prisoners, as food had gone astray due to lack of supervision.”

A prison source said: “Prisoners take their food very, very seriously.

“No eggs and limited bananas will really get their goat, but the worst of it is the Sunday chicken dinner.

“That’s a staple, like Friday night fish and chips – so there will have been a lot, and I mean a lot, of pretty grim faces.”
