A high possibility of the UK being surrounded by giant walls of snow for around 66 hours is imminent before Christmas.
Weather maps show 1cm to 2cm of snow falling over Scotland and Ireland from as early as December 20 as weather conditions turn freezing.
Assessing the long-range weather forecast, the Met Office said: “It now looks probable that there will be at least one short-lived colder interlude next week, with a period of north or northwesterly winds that could bring some snow and ice, especially in the north.
“From next week, high pressure will likely move further west into the central Atlantic, allowing a return to unsettled conditions and typically nearer average temperatures nationwide.”

Snowfall will hit Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, while temperatures are set to fall to -1 in Inverness on December 23.
Snowy conditions will also be seen in Belfast, as temperatures steadily drop.
Early winter has already seen a mix of conditions for Britons, with temperatures swinging between average and freezing and precipitation between snow and heavy rain.
Looking ahead to the festive period, experts reveal snow showers are set to intensify over Christmas from December 20, when cold weather conditions could cover the country from Scotland to Wales.

Ahead of the cold weather, temperatures will remain average over the next 24 hours.
The Met Office states low pressure will clear from Wednesday, December 13, “turning drier” with “sunny spells from the northwest”.
The rest of the week will see “outbreaks of rain at times” with sunny spells expected in the northwest of the UK later in the day.
The chances of a white Christmas will become clearer as December 25 nears.
According to the Met Office’s definition, it is a “white Christmas” if one snowflake falls in the 24 hours of 25 December in specific locations including; Buckingham Palace, Belfast (Aldergrove Airport), Aberdeen (Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen FC), Edinburgh (Castle), Coronation Street in Manchester and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
